REGISTRATION QUESTIONS
I am a current undergraduate student. Do I need to register for the Obligation Ceremony?
Registration for current students is coordinated through the School of Engineering. Information will be provided directly to students on ceremony information and ring sizing.
I have an engineering degree from outside Canada. Can I attend an obligation ceremony and receive an iron ring?
Yes, if you meet one of the following criteria:
Graduate of an undergraduate Engineering program at the University of Guelph or other institution accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CAEB), or
Registration as a Professional Engineer within Canada, or
Have met the academic requirements for licensure with a provincial or territorial engineering body.
I graduated from the University of Guelph, or another accredited Canadian University, but was unable to attend my ceremony. Can I attend an obligation ceremony and receive an iron ring?
Yes, you would be eligible to attend a ceremony as a Senior Candidate and would need to provide confirmation of your graduation with a copy of your degree and/or transcript.
As the University of Guelph’s undergraduate engineering program is accredited, you may attend a ceremony at any Camp in Canada and receive your ring.
Can I receive a ring without attending an Obligation Ceremony?
No. your ring is a reminder of the obligation you have taken, so you must attend the ceremony in order to receive your ring.
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CEREMONY
What is the dress code for the ceremony?
The Obligation Ceremony is a serious event, and candidates and guests are expected to wear business attire - generally what one would wear to a job interview.
What happens if I am late arriving?
Guests and candidates who are late for the ceremony will be denied entry.
Can I receive my ring from a relative who is attending the ceremony?
Only previously obligated engineers may present rings to Candidates during a ceremony.
Are guests permitted to attend the ceremony?
Guests are permitted at a ceremony, but must be pre-registered to attend. Registration information will be provided to current students and will be posted to this website. The number of guests may be limited, subject to available space.
Am I eligible to attend future ceremonies as a guest if I attended a ceremony?
Engineers who have attended an Obligation Ceremony, either in-person or virtually, are encouraged to attend an obligation ceremony at any Camp in Canada in the future, subject to available space and applicable Camp policies. The same is also true for other obligated engineers wishing to attend a Camp 17 ceremony.
QUESTIONS ABOUT RING REPLACEMENTS
Can I replace somebody else's ring as a surprise?
No. You can only replace your own ring.
Can I send somebody else to pick up my ring?
Exchanges and replacements are predominately completed by mail. In-person pick-up, by yourself or somebody else may be possible. Please email the camp to review.
Is there a charge to exchange my ring?
No., you can exchange it for a different size ring at no charge.
I would like to exchange my ring and also keep my old ring. Is that permitted?
No. We do not allow obligated engineers to own more than one ring. If you would like to exchange your ring, you must relinquish the one that you have.
What if I don't know my obligation number?
If you don't know your obligation number, then we can confirm your attendance from our records. We may request additional information to confirm your identity.
